Use Chrome Keyboard Shortcuts to Save Selected Text to Google Sheets

Now you can use Chrome keyboard shortcuts to save data to your Google Sheets spreadsheets!

Starting in version 1.4.8 of the Add to Sheets Chrome extension, you can use keyboard shortcuts to save selected text to your Google Sheets spreadsheets. In the extension settings (Account dropdown > Settings > Shortcuts) you can link a configured column or group with a browser shortcut command.

That means you can save selected text to your Google Sheets spreadsheets without having to right-click and select the destination column or group. This is especially useful if you are working with a lot of data and want to save time by using keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse.

This is currently available as beta functionality in the extension. One shortcut is available to free users, and you can configure up to three shortcuts for users on the Pro plan.

In the example above, using the shortcut Shift + Ctrl + M will save the selected text to the <📔 Add to Notes> column.

The commands can be set or edited in Chrome on the Keyboard Shortcuts page. If the recommended shortcut for Add to Sheets is already in use then you’ll need to set your own.

Once you set the command for the corresponding shortcut, it will show in the extension settings page. For example, you can also set the shortcut to be a combination of keys, like Ctrl + Shift + 1, Ctrl + Alt + 1, etc. The prepopulated ones are just suggestions. You can set any combination of keys that you want to use or that are the most convenient and ergonomic for you.

Currently, Custom shortcut 1, Custom shortcut 2, and Custom shortcut 3 are available for use.

How to Use

  1. Select the text you want to save to your Google Sheets spreadsheet.
  2. Press the keyboard shortcut you configured in the extension settings.
  3. The selected text will be saved to the configured column or group in your Google Sheets spreadsheet.

Note, that the this functionality will only work on web pages that allow you to select text. For example, it will not work on web pages that use a custom text input field or on web pages that do not allow text selection outside of the web application. One example of this is Google Docs, where the application takes over the keyboard shortcuts and does not allow the extension to capture the selected text.
